Abstract

This community engagement initiative aims to optimize the market reach and distribution strategy of local cookie-producing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in East Jakarta. Small culinary enterprises play a vital role in sustaining the local economy; however, they frequently encounter critical operational bottlenecks, including limited capital, restricted marketing channels, and a lack of formal distribution partnerships. To address these barriers, a participatory direct-mentoring framework was executed through a structured four-stage process: pre-assessment surveying, diagnostic needs identification, targeted intervention, and impact evaluation. The mentorship focused on empowering business owners to establish consignment-based partnerships with local bakery stores, alongside enhancing product readiness by upgrading packaging design, calibrating market-aligned pricing, and clarifying product labeling. The results demonstrate that hands-on assistance significantly enhanced participants' strategic understanding of retail distribution, increased operational confidence, and improved product aesthetics to meet commercial store standards. Furthermore, transitioning from sole reliance on direct word-of-mouth sales to active consignment distribution expanded product accessibility and opened up potential retail channels. Overall, this initiative highlights the essential role of university-led community engagement in bridging academic resources with grassroots economic needs, fostering long-term resilience, and strengthening the market competitiveness of local small food businesses.
